Signs You’re Ready to Take the Leap and How to Prepare Spiritually and Practically

Many dream of leaving their jobs to pursue entrepreneurship, but is it truly time—or are you simply frustrated? As Christians, our work ethic, faithfulness, and motives matter before God. Transitioning from employee to entrepreneur should be a step of faith, not a reaction to dissatisfaction.

The Bible offers timeless wisdom on work, stewardship, and leadership. Here are three key questions to help you discern God’s timing for your next step.

1. Are You Leaving for the Right Reasons?

It’s easy to think that quitting will solve all your problems, but is your decision led by God or driven by emotions? You might feel undervalued, believe your boss is incompetent, or feel like you’re being overlooked. But before you resign, consider these red and green flags.

Signs You May Not Be Ready:

• You’re leaving primarily because you feel unappreciated.

• You struggle with submission and want to escape accountability.

• You haven’t built a sustainable financial or strategic plan, hoping “faith” will fill the gaps.

Signs You May Be Ready:

• You sense a clear calling and have sought wise counsel confirming the timing.

• You have prepared financially, strategically, and spiritually for the transition.

• You’ve been faithful in your current role and sense it’s time for something new.

Biblical Wisdom for Discernment:

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” – Proverbs 21:5

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:21

David faithfully served under King Saul, even when it was difficult (1 Samuel 16-26). He waited for God’s timing rather than forcing his promotion. Leaving out of frustration, lack of affirmation, or submission issues won’t make you a better leader—it will only make you an entrepreneur with unresolved baggage.

Key Insight:

If your calling isn’t clear and your motives aren’t pure, stepping out prematurely can lead to struggles. Seek God’s timing—not just relief from frustration.

Reflection Question:

Am I running from something, or stepping into something God has truly called me to?

2. The Stewardship Test: Have You Been Faithful Where You Are?

Before God entrusts you with more, He watches how you handle what you already have. If you’re careless with company time, resources, and responsibilities, how will you handle the weight of entrepreneurship?

Signs of Poor Stewardship in the Workplace:

• Cutting corners when no one is watching.

• Complaining more than contributing.

• Showing up late or giving minimal effort because you “don’t care anymore.”

Signs of Faithfulness in the Workplace:

• Taking ownership and working as unto the Lord, regardless of recognition.

• Using company resources responsibly, as if they were God’s property.

• Serving your employer with excellence, even when you know you’re leaving soon.

Biblical Wisdom for Stewardship:

“Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.” – Proverbs 18:9

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” – Ecclesiastes 9:10

Joseph was a faithful steward in Potiphar’s house and even in prison, long before God made him a leader in Egypt (Genesis 39-41). If you weren’t a diligent, trustworthy employee, why would you be a responsible business owner?

Key Insight:

God promotes those who steward well. If you’ve been careless at work, use this season to develop discipline and integrity before stepping into something new.

Reflection Question:

Would I hire someone like me if I were the boss?

3. Preparing Spiritually: Submission Precedes Leadership

Many leave their jobs thinking, “I can’t wait to be my own boss!” But if you can’t submit to leadership now, leading others will be just as difficult.

Even Jesus demonstrated submission—first as a young boy in Luke 2:51, and later, as a man submitting to Pilate’s authority in John 19:11. If you couldn’t submit to a boss, can you truly submit to God in business?

Check Your Heart Before You Leave:

• Are you leaving because you dislike accountability?

• Do you struggle with correction from leadership?

• Have you honoured your employer, even when they were difficult?

Why Submission Matters:

• Entrepreneurs still submit—to clients, laws, and ultimately, God.

• A rebellious heart doesn’t disappear with a new title—it follows you into leadership.

• If you leave to escape submission, you’ll face the same issues in your business.

Biblical Wisdom for Submission & Humility:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” – Proverbs 9:10

“Haughty eyes and a proud heart—the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.” – Proverbs 21:4

Key Insight:

How you leave matters. If you leave in dishonour, you may close doors God intended to keep open for your future.

Reflection Question:

Am I leaving with a heart of honour, or am I carrying rebellion and pride into my next season?
